When new products are being developed it is important that the launch is well coordinated. Too often the schedule launch date has to be revised due to the development project running late.  If marketing are not in regular contact with developemnent and manufacturing, they could well organize the launch with the special advertising before product is even available.  To prevent this the project and launch should be an item on the agenda at the sales and operations planning meeting

detailed material specifications should be maintained , with version control related to products versions..Product line diversity is  when many different products are built using the same facility. Because of the range of products, it usually means a larger number of raw materials or piece parts.  The more parts we stock, means more specifications , more inventory, more purchase orders and more stock bins, to mention just a few of the effects.

Shelf life is the amount of time an item may be held in inventory before it becoms unuseable.  This is a problem experienced by many industries but sespecially the food and pharmaceutical companies. Although the economics tell them to build a certain quantity of a product, if you are baking bread, you can't build a week's supply of a special item because the EOQ tells you to. After two days you would have to through it away.  Your order quantities are vey often controlled by the shelf life problem.  In other industries you get items that perish or rust, in others you have batch numbers with life expectancy dates.
